Counting on Calico by Phyllis Tildes. Children can learn many interesting facts about cats while practicing their counting skills. A good early science book and a great discussion starter about families.

Domino Addition by Lynette Long. Uses dominos to practice adding and counting the number of dots. Buy a set and start counting. Numbers 1 through 12 are included.

Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni. Introduces the concept of measuring using an inchworm who measures for birds. Be careful inchworm!

Mouse Count by Ellen Walsh. How many mice can get into a small jar? And what is that snake trying to do?

Moja Means One by Muriel Feelings. This Swahili counting book is also a social studies book for young children with beautiful drawings of Africa. It will lead to discussions of other cultures.

What Comes in 2's, 3's, & 4's? by Suzanne Aker. This book is just what it says it is - a book exploring what things come in 2's, 3's, and 4's. It will lead children and their adults to think of other things that come in quantities. The book also explores concepts, likenesses and differences, and sets.

The Right Number of Elephants by Jeff Sheppard. The child in this book imagines many different situations in which you might need help. In each case there is a perfect number of elephants to get the job done. A playful number book which can be a springboard for discussions about what to do in tricky situations.

Ten Cats Have Hats by Jean Marzollo. This is a simple counting book with a repeating refrain. Your child can easily read this book to you. The text is simple and the artwork is appealing.

Count by Denise Fleming. A very colorful book for counting animals up to 10 and then counting by tens to fifty. The animals are bouncing, snapping, jumping, wiggling, stretching, and snapping. A good book for language development and movement.

1, 2, 3 To The Zoo by Eric Carle. A wordless counting book that is useful on many levels. The animals are on cars bound for the zoo. A new car is introduced on each page with the train car from the previous page joining other cars in the train crawling across the bottom of each page. There is also a little mouse who appears in a different spot on each page. A good book for meaningful and rational counting, visual perception, and discussing zoos.

Anno's Counting Book by Mitsumasa Anno. In this book, a country scene is shown on every page undergoing changes through the seasons and years. An excellent book for counting, groups and sets, one-to-one correspondence, and observing changes over time.

How Many Bugs in a Box? by David A. Carter. A cardboard lift-the-flap book which will appeal to all children. The box is different on each page and so are the bugs. A good book for counting sets to 10 and for reinforcing concepts of color, size, and shape.

Ten Little Rabbits by Virginia Grossman and Sylvia Long. Ten Little Rabbits by Virginia Grossman and Sylvia Long. The rabbits are American Indians going about their daily tasks. They are wearing the colors of 10 different tribes which are discussed at the end of the book. A very nice book for counting, patterning, observing likenesses and differences, and studying other cultures.
