Jack and Jill and their parents lived in a small house in the country. One rainy day, Jack and Jill had to stay inside. They read books for awhile. They worked on a puzzle. They had lunch. They read some more. They got bored.

When they couldn't think of anything else to do, they began to tease each other. Their mother was about to scold them when the rain stopped and the sun appeared. Instead of fussing at them, she handed them two buckets and asked them to bring some water from the well.

Jack and Jill were happy to go outside and they hurried off to the well. They filled the buckets and started back. They couldn't rush on the way back because the filled buckets were heavy and because the rain had made the ground muddy and slippery.

Perhaps you know what happened next.

Jack and Jill went up the hill,
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after!

Jack's mother bandaged his head and she made sure that Jill was OK. Then she sent their father to fetch the water which he did without falling down.
