Melvin, the spider, liked to watch people. He wanted to know what they did all day. One day he saw Little Miss Muffet's mother hand her a bowl of something called curds and whey. It was a kind of breakfast food made from milk.

Little Miss Muffet sat down to eat. Melvin slowly made a little silk rope and climbed down to have a closer look at curds and whey. What happened next surprised him as much as it surprised the little girl.

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey.
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away.
