In the fall of1988 I bought a circus car to add to the train that customarily ran around our Christmas tree. It was to be to be a gift for Susan. When I remembered that the collection of Smurf® figures our children had gathered a few years earlier included acrobats and clowns and other appropriate characters, I decided to give Susan an entire circus to go with her new railroad car.
Thus, with the aid of a computer, a color printer, and a bit of imagination, Le Cirque Bleu was born. On Christmas Day, Susan received her Circus car, a poster announcing the beginning of the 1989 "Tour", her Ringmaster's badge, and guest passes for her to give to whomever she wished. After Christmas, when all the presents were gone from beneath the tree, Le Cirque Bleu set up its tents for the first time.
Since then, we've added this and that - a couple more train cars, more figures, new signage and posters, new circus "acts". Each year in our house, we are not saddened when Christmas day ends and there is a big empty space under the tree. The anticipation of Christmas is replaced by the anticipation of the arrival of Le Cirque Bleu, and the anticipation of Le Grandchildren!
